My cousin had recently died when I put this to paper. It’s somber.
Rhythm and Blues- Written 5/16/10
Rhythm and blues
Rhythm and blues
Sometimes we have the rhythm
Sometimes we have the blues
We have the rhythm when all is good
When everything is exactly as it should
Be in our mind’s eye
But we take the rhythm for granted sometimes
We have the rhythm and it stirs our souls
It keeps us alive, it’s more precious than gold
These are the good times we love
But these are never what we’re thinking of
(In the long run)
Rhythm and blues
Rhythm and blues
Sometimes we have the rhythm
Sometimes we have the blues
Then the blues come and wash it away
Yes it still stings when I think of that day
When a life came to an end
Still wondering why it had to be my cousin
Or how I realize that I’ve been living a lie
And my insecurity has been eating me alive
The truth is that love is my greatest fear
My favorite fear, one that I hold so dear
Rhythm and blues
Rhythm and blues
Sometimes we have the rhythm
Sometimes we have the blues
I’m too depressed to fall prey to drinking
I’m moving in a haze, I don’t know what I’m thinking
I want to close my eyes and dream it all way
Dream it all until my dying day
But I woke up on Sunday morning with Jesus calling my name
It moved me to go to church again
I sat in a pew and bowed my head
And said a prayer for the live and the dead
Jesus said yes my child I do realize
You want to hear a sound that recognizes the pain inside
It will all get better for you
Right now you just have the blues
Rhythm and blues
Rhythm and blues
Sometimes we have the rhythm
Sometimes we have the blues
